Cara's grandmother gives her a special amulet with a strand of white hair in it that her grandmother has always claimed came from a unicorn's mane. The story starts right in the action, as Cara and her grandmother are stalked by a sinister man, who chases them into a church. Cara is a young girl living with her grandmother, having been abandoned by her parents. I might be curious to hunt them down now, though. I didn't know there were follow up books, because they didn't come out when I was a kid. It's epic fantasy for kids! With unicorns! I recently recommended it to a friend's son who is about ten, and he enjoyed it too and even got the next books in the series. (Sept.I remember reading this out loud to my young brother when I was eight or ten years old and we both loved it. Fantasy fans might be content with the headlong pacing, but most will hope that future installments will include more fluid writing and less convoluted plot lines. Cara's loyalties are severely tested, leaving plenty of room for a sequel. But drama builds with the revelation that the hunter is none other than Cara's father (who long ago abandoned her) no stock villain, he is given plausible motives for his inimical deeds. The plot jumps from one episode to the next, and can be confusing. Aided by a young unicorn and an assortment of odd creatures, including Dimblethum (``He looked like a bear that had started to become a man but hadn't finished the process'') and Squijum (``a cross between a monkey and a squirrel''), Cara embarks on a number of dangerous adventures.
